Kiribati folk music is generally played sitting down, but Te Kaimatoa and Te Buki were performed by standing dancers. Traditional songs were often about love and romance, but many songs and dances were based on the drama of daily living, epic adventures at sea, or legendary battles between rival factions. I made a number of tape recordings which are quite unique, since many such traditions were being eroded by modern music. Our arrival in a village was usually taken as an opportunity for feasting, singing, and dancing by young and old.
