- The Brain matters- The Centre for Brain Health, Dublin Neurological Institute, a charity, is a centre of excellence for the care of people with neurological disorders.
- Over 700,000 people in Ireland have a neurological problem including, Headache/Migraine, Epilepsy, Stroke, Parkinson’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Motor Neuron Disease, Traumatic brain injury, and Alzheimer’s disease.
- Approximately 44,000 people per year receive a new neurological diagnosis. 40% of the population will develop Alzheimer’s disease by the age of 85. One in seven GP attendees has a neurological problem. One in 5 A&E medical admissions have a neurological problem.
What is the DNI?
- The Dublin Neurological Institute, a charity, is an academic centre of excellence for the care of people with neurological disorders. The DNI’s Board provides firm governance to ensure we provide the best of care for the best value for money.
- Unfortunately many patients with neurological illnesses (Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, stroke, epilepsy, migraine,) get a late diagnosis resulting in delayed treatment, due to lack of access to neurological care.
How does the DNI help?
- The DNI can solve this problem – The Dublin Neurological Institute offers an effective model to increase access and improve the diagnosis and treatment of neurological disorders in Ireland. It provides value for money; it is flexible and can meet demand as needed.
- The Centre for Brain Health, Dublin Neurological Institute is a leader in teaching and research into neurological illnesses leading to new knowledge and innovation in the area.
The Need
- We avail of funds and resources via multiple sources including the Mater Hospital, fundraising, philanthropy, legacies and other donations. Sustainability of the DNI requires a significant injection of funds to ensure that Irish citizens can access the best neurological care.
- The DNI received 1.5million funding form Elan Pharmaceutical Company and also the DNI was able to get a further 1.5million to develop the North West Neurological Institute (NWNI) at Sligo General Hospital. The NWNI is modelled on the DNI to improve access to patients in the North West.
- The DNI and NWNI need further funding to maintain the present services but also to expand this service nationally. With further investment in the DNI and the NWNI patient care for neurological diseases will improve. The DNI and the NWNI can evolve into an Irish Neurological Institute (INI) with units strategically placed around the country linked by a common web-based data base to increase standards of care by using standard operation procedures. The INI will attract the interest of Pharma for therapeutic trials and this will bring in income to enhance patient care.
- Patients in rural areas will in time have access to specialist neurological care and will not be subject to postcode lottery on healthcare availability.
